The landscape of La Geria is the result of the local winegrowers’ tireless efforts to restore their land’s fertility, since the volcanic eruptions of Timanfaya in the 18th century (between 1730 and 1736) buried large areas of the island under lava.
In addition to the volcanic origin of the soil, the wine-growing region of La Geria is characterised by a representative, man-made agricultural landscape. The vines are planted in deep holes and protected from the trade winds by semicircular stone walls. Furthermore, the soil around the vine is covered by porous volcanic rock (lapilli, rofe), which ensures that the humidity in the soil remains and does not evaporate. This cultivation system does not permit the use of machines, so the tending of the vine is done manually.
