La Geria: A unique volcanic landscape in the world.

¿How can the arid island of Lanzarote produces its excellent white and sweet wines?

The answer is “La Geria”, man made craters situated in natural layers of fine volcanic rock. In the center of these craters the grapevine plant is placed and a half-moon of stones is placed around the borders as protection against the wind. Lines and lines of these green, ochre and black coloured structures produce a unique landscape in the world that helped Lanzarote to be declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve

Wineries and Wines recognized worldwide

Although this system is used to grow many different species of fruit such as the fig tree, the main star of La Geria is the grapevine. In this protected landscape there are numerous award winning wineries including the grape of malvasia. This grape was wiped out in Europe due to a blight but survived in the Canary Islands. Beneath the vineyards there lies another natural wonder, “Los Naturalistas”, a 1600 meter long cave formed by volcanic eruptions.
